Could there be any truth to the "Lake Mendocino Alligator" urban legend?

I don't believe for a minute that an alligator could live that far north. There is a certain latitude that 'gators stay below and its way south of Northern CA. If they are seeing something in Lake Mendocino its not an alligator. I'll be watching to see what other answers are posted, thanks.
